Pottery and Poetry Workshop in conjunction with Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina.
I was invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to design and teach a pottery workshop presented in conjunction with "Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina". This renowned exhibit showcased pottery from formerly enslaved crafts people in Old Edgefield, South Carolina, including the works of renowned master potter David Drake.
My workshop invited participants to engage with the historic vessels, including the poetic verses inscribed on many of the pots, and to then translate that experience into handmade pottery that participants created as part of the class.
Wheel throwing instructor
I designed and taught a 7-week mixed-level ceramic course. My course catered to a range of students, from beginners to experienced potters, and covered everything from the basics of wedging, centering, and pulling, to more advanced techniques like throwing off the hump and making teapots. I am a responsive and engaging instructor, balancing hands-on instruction with leaving room for independent exploration. I like to be guided by my students' needs, and create an environment where people of all skillsets have room to grow and explore.
A conversation with NowThis about how I run my pottery business and the importance of pricing and valuing our work.
I was the inaugural guest on this informative podcast about what it's really like to make a living from the things you make. Rebecca and I discuss the origin of my logo and branding, the unglamorous realities of running a studio, and the impact that George Floyd and the racial reckoning of 2020 had on my business.
